Makeup Mondays...Cream Shadows...

Powder eye shadows are a thing of the past...they drop and make a mess, gather in the eye crease and don't last or hold intense colour well.

The solution? Cream eye shadows.

International MUA's have been in on this trend for years and it's slowly filtering into our neck of the woods...thank goodness. The colours are intense, they blend well (if you work very quickly), they dry and last all day without any touch ups! Since using this product and application, I can now see the difference in photos and can tell powder eye shadow from a mile away.

You only require a very small amount of product and you can even apply a powder shadow on top to intensify the colour or set the look even further. Cream shadows are relatively waterproof but most definitely sweat-proof. They are quick to apply and easy to blend...but they dry quickly, so you need to work fast. Very fast. Given that fact, it has knocked off crucial minutes when doing makeup for a job...and yet it still looks incredible!

Here are some colours I've invested in:

 MAC Groundwork {great for contouring and natural looks}

Bobbi Brown Chrome Patina {very metallic grey with a lot of shimmer}

 Benefit Stiletto {maroon-purple}

MAC Base Study {light shimmer to highlight lid or inner corner of eye}

 MAC Blackground {standard black for smokey eye}

MAC Indianwood {gold shimmer}

Bobbi Brown Bone {matt off-white great for 60's look}

Bobbi Brown Steel {matt brown-grey}

MAC 217 brush {great for application and blending. Be sure to clean in between uses (if you're not fast enough) as the product dries very quickly and can make the brush dense & heavy which affects application}

I've actually gone "halvies" with another local MUA so that we could test out the colours without spending a fortune. Also, it's unlikely we'll go through the entire pot before it starts to dry, so this is the most cost-effective and kit efficient way to purchase.

The MAC pot paints are more cost effective given the price / quantity ratio however their colours are limited. The Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Creme Shadows have more of a colour range including metallics and they have a creamier texture. So it depends on what you're looking for...

I suggest going shopping with a friend, choose some colours together and share them out. (Woolworths has a set of 3 empty plastics jars in their beauty/travel section which work well if you want to de-pot some cream shadow)

Let me tell you, this has revolutionized my professional makeup routine!

PS: I guess there will always be a time and place for powder eye shadows...but if you (as an individual or client) want a look that needs to last a 16 hour shoot...this is what you're looking for...and I'd be happy to apply it for you *cheeky grin*

PRODUCT REVIEW ~ PERSONAL KIT

I always test out new products on myself before I use it on models or brides. I have sensitive, combination skin, so I usually know that if it works on me, it'll work on most people.

I've used MAC face & body foundations for a while now but I'm finding that I need a variety of foundations and concealers, so I have begun the search...the never-ending search....for new and better products. I prefer to use lighter, more sheer foundations and build it up than slapping on a paste of high coverage base. This way I can control the coverage and still allow the models natural skin to shine through.

I've added these little gems to my personal kit so that I can test them before I spend the GDP of a large, third world country by adding them to my professional kit.

What they say: HALO is the first anti-aging powder with the science of skin care built in. It's advanced formulation of pure gold, 48 minerals, 11 amino acids and a powerful peptide deliver powerful anti-aging benefits while the patented hydration system continuously revitalizes skin for a brighter, more radiant complexion all day. HALO’s innovative built in shaver gives you the perfect amount of luminous loose powder every time with no mess.

What I say: I've had my eye on this powder for quite some time but the price tag has always deterred me from snatching it off the shelf. Now that I have it, I wish I'd bought it sooner. It's easy to use, the kabuki brush it comes with is soft and applies the powder perfectly and it gives a good coverage for a powder.  It lasts most of the day (I have an oily t-zone) yet doesn't make you look like you've face-planted into Nigella's flour storage. If you have generally good skin, this might be the only foundation/powder you need. Seriously.

Final verdict: As soon as I can afford to, I will be adding all 4 colours to my kit. It's going to be amazing for brides...

What they say: Instantly helps soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Light-diffusing optics brighten shadows. Creamy, light formula flows through for smooth brush-on, precision application.

What I say: They call it sheer. I think it's a moderate coverage. They say it illuminates and perfects. I agree. This is the best concealer I've used on my eyes and I have some dark circles, so I know eye concealers. It covers, corrects and lasts. Application is easy and it really does reduce the "appearance" of the lines on the outside corners of my eyes. I am a fan.

Final verdict: A definite option for the professional kit in the lighter shades for models with bags, circles or darkness under their eyes.

What they say: Soothing oil-free makeup instantly colour-corrects flushing, blushing. Calming ingredients help minimize flare-ups. Beneficial probiotic technology helps strengthen skin's barrier. Keeps environmental triggers at bay with SPF plus antioxidants.

What I say: As mentioned, I have sensitive skin so I tend to get random redness.  It's a moderate coverage that blends nicely and builds up for higher coverage. I could probably use something a little more sheer, but I can always dilute it with my moisturiser.  It really does reduce the "appearance" of redness and red areas. The SPF 15 is an extra bonus, just be aware the the SPF in a foundation can make it photograph white or lighter than it looks.
The range also includes a concealer and powder but they are very yellow and I didn't find it necessary to buy the whole lot...the foundation is enough.

Final verdict: I love it for myself and I like the fact that it treats the skin as well as acting as a foundation. Again, I might add a couple lighter shade to the kit at some stage.

What they say: Our revolutionary new weightless concealer instantly smooths skin and makes dark circles and imperfections virtually disappear. The good-for-your-skin formula includes cell-energizing ribose, soy, angelica extract and caffeine to reduce redness, dark circles and under eye puffiness. Soft focus pearls reflect light to minimize the appearance of fine lines and blemishes. The soft touch precision applicator provides the smoothest application for the most delicate skin areas. Provides buildable coverage with a natural finish.

What I say: Eh...it's nice for very light coverage and using if you have a few problem areas but otherwise great skin. I found it too light and sheer with a slightly oily finish. I'm moving away from the idea of layering on powder to set a concealer and I believe that a concealer should set itself. I didn't really find that it builds up nicely but it is perfect if you're looking for something light.

Final verdict: If I need to use something this sheer on a model, I could just build up a light foundation rather than using a completely separate product.  I think this is better for personal use.

What they say: This innovative gel-based waterproof liner stays blendable for 60 seconds then dries to a smudge-proof, budge-proof finish that lasts all day. JET SET is perfect for lining the inner rim of the eye or as a stay-put traditional liner.

What I say: I bought this in the hope I could use it at a cream eye shadow but they are not kidding...you have 60 seconds before it dries and then it's not going anywhere. I love it as an eye liner and the dark brown I got is perfect for defining a natural eye.

Final verdict: I'm off to buy the black. It's that good. It doesn't move. Actually, I may get all the colours!

So there it is. I hope to do this more often so if there's a product your interested in buying, drop me a line and maybe I can offer a little advice before you take the plunge.

My Work...Mr Price...

I'm one of the stylists for Mr Price and it's a great gig. The team is amazing and super organised...the models are professional...and the creatives (photographers/makeup artist etc) are some of the best!

I step outside of the makeup world when I work for them and do the styling...which usually entails a lot of props, so my little car gets very full...but like I said, it's fun!

In my experience, I find styling to be 70% organisation and 30% research & trend forecasting. There's usually a lot to do as a stylist...fetching garments, deciding how they should be worn, steaming, cleaning, sourcing props/accessories/jewellery/footwear, pre-prod meetings, dressing models, pinning, clipping, returns...the list goes on and on.

You need to be prepared, organised and willing to work hard and long hours. The stylist is usually the person doing a million things at once, carrying props and boxes and clothes, all while watching the garments while shooting...making sure there's no creases, that is sits properly on the model and constantly checking for threads, tags and labels.

It's hard graft and there are very few people who understand the enormity of the task...just because you can dress someone, doesn't make you a stylist.

Having said that (this post has elaborated beyond my initial reckoning), I find it a challenge that I enjoy and relish. Especially when images like these are the final product!

Have a look at the Mr Price blog to see their inspiration!

Makeup Monday...Acne Covering Makeup...

"Lisa Eldridge has become one of the most highly regarded make-up artists on the international beauty and fashion circuits today. Her signature look, best described as a fresh, flawless skin and an understated modern approach to beauty, has made her indispensable to supermodels, celebrities and magazine editors alike."

I've found her website, blog and youtube channel invaluable in adding finesse to my work. She certainly knows how to finish and polish a look.

One of her most useful videos is on "Acne Covering Makeup". Unfortunately most people I know with bad or even slightly scarred skin, tend to plaster on the makeup which only makes them look flat. I love Lisa's theory behind her makeup and once you've watched the video, I'm sure you won't help but agree.

CELEBRITY POWDER MISHAPS

Everyone remembers this...

...and this...

...then recently, this...
I think the most confusing part of this mystery (other than how could their respective MUA's do that to them??) is why did nobody else notice or stop them?

As it turns out, apparently one product is to blame...Makeup Forever HD Powder. Here's an excerpt from the original article...

"Microfinish Powder is meant for HD TV. It looks beautiful in person and through HD cameras, but the minute someone snaps a photo using flash, the powder becomes visible. The Microfinish Powder is available in one universal shade—white—but is also translucent."

My fave virtual MUA demonstrates this...

Makeup Forever's statement...

"The company doesn’t know what brand of makeup is making Hollywood’s leading faces look like they’re wearing pounds of concealer when the flashbulb lights up, but is certain it’s not a Makeup Forever product."

The moral of the story...product knowledge, research and testing! Please don't go out there and buy something just based on the ads or commercials...or even because the lady behind the counter says something which sounds intelligent...do some research, ask for testers and try it out before you spend a fortune. It doesn't really matter whether this product is to blame, the concern is that it has been used incorrectly and has not been tested by the MUA using it.

I visit a lot of makeup stores and beauty counters and if I had a buck for every stupid and contradictory thing the assistant said to me, I'd be a rich little monster. Most of them don't have any makeup training and if they do, it's based solely on the product they're selling and is biased towards it. Never take what they say at face value...listen carefully and don't let them apply it to your face, apply it yourself! Ask for a tester, go home and try it out, photograph it, wear it all day to see how it lasts...

Don't let ignorance or laziness affect your work as a makeup artist...question everything and test it all.

So hot right now...Feminine with edge...

I'm still establishing recurring posts for myblog but I think this idea might stick. In these posts, I'll touch on what's on trend and what to expect in the future...so without further ado....

MY LOOK

OTHERS ROCKING IT

Nude is a big colour for spring internationally as it's a softer more feminine version of the brown & chocolate from winter. It gives the illusion of showing skin (for obvious reasons) and is best worn is light, flowing fabrics in a loose fit.

Cinched waists don't appear to be going anywhere and this hippy lady is alright with that...just be sure to balance the volume on top too.

Platform heels are incredible for creating long legs, especially in nudes, and can be seen everywhere from Aldo to Edgars.

Leather is a massive staple for winter...skirts, waistcoats, jackets and shorts....just be careful not to wear it too tight...please people, don't pull a "Ross".

Overall, the look of mixing feminine (soft, flowing, light) with masculine (structure, angular, boyfriend-fit) is still exceptionally popular and won't disappear anytime soon.

Makeup Monday...Best lip gloss ever...

I promised Lauren from Glossary that I'd do this post after she complained about the MAC Lip Glass leaking...and it does...it's the most annoying thing in my kit. Although it gives a lovely shine, in the hands of less experienced MUA's, it can look like the model is drooling or has over-injected lips. It also acts as a trap to fly-away hair and there is nothing worse than a model yanking the hair away from her lips and smearing lip gloss all over her face.

To avoid this, try this AMAZING tip from Wayne of Goss Makeup Artist:

It works incredibly well and gives a 3D depth and texture to the lip...not just a whack of shine.

I've raved about Wayne's videos before but I can't tell you enough how useful his videos are....I've learnt more from youtube and blogs than anywhere else! You can too, just have a look through some of my "online library" here.

Product of the week....Graphic Tees...

I am a BIG fan of graphic tees...they're an easy way to let the world know what you think and where they stand. I have 2 faves of my own...a "free love" tee from Quiksilver Women and a skull wide neck tee from Zara.

Graphic tees are easy to wear...getting the right attitude to go with is the trick. They will never go out of fashion as long as people have something to say...

The little things...

So underrated!!

Honestly, there is nothing better...as soon as I walk in the house the shoes and bra come off...Bourne loves it!

Yes.

Hopefully that'll happen sometime this week...taking her lunch :)

I love Christmas. Seriously. Was very bummed with Bourne when he took down the tree on the 23rd because we had a shoot the next day and needed to use the lounge as a studio.

Elusive little f*ckers...trying desperately to find the "perfect" jeans... :(

I do this more that you would reckon...

Best feeling!!

Rare yet special..

They do...and I love them!
