BEHIND THE SCENES & PRODUCTS USED ~ FOX 2012 SHOOT
Last week I did the makeup and hair for the Fox 2012 summer shoot. We traveled down the coast for a day and a half with two models and two of their team riders.
It was a fun crew and although we had a little rain and jetski issues, we got the shots and had a good time.
We were shooting in direct sunlight on the beach in windy and humid weather, so I had to make sure that the ladies' makeup lasted all day with as little powder as possible. Also, the girls were quite tanned and being the good little munchkins they are, their faces' were lighter than their bodies (sun block!) so I had to match their foundation to their tans without making them look Jersey-Shore-ish.
I do this by using Mac Studio Fix Fluid in the models natural colour (other than the Mac Face & Body foundation, this is the only other Mac foundation I use) after cleansing and moisturising the models skin.
I like the foundation to look flawless but light so that the models skin shines through, so I either use a wet sponge or a stipling brush to apply the foundation (for a flawless finish with a stipling brush, I spritz it rosewater and blend out the foundation).
To warm up the complexion, I use Mac Face & Body in a warmer colour (to match the tan) and apply it to the "tan areas" on the face and blend it in with the rest of the foundation. I also do this on the neck and bring it down onto the decolletage.
In general, I used cream based makeup (blush, contour, highlight and eye shadows etc) and buffed it into the skin to make it last and last and last.
I finished off with Mac Fix + to SET the makeup and Kryolan Derma Colour Fixing spray to FINISH the makeup. Not sure what the difference is? Check it out here
The makeup lasted all day in the heat and humidity and didn't budge when we asked Simone to dip under the water for the last shot.

BEHIND THE SCENES ~ BEAUTY WITH ANKE
I recently worked with the beautiful Anke from Outlaws Models and after we finished the editorial part of the shoot, we did some beauty work.
She's so incredibly lovely!
Vaughan Treyvellan was our photographer and he was so happy with the last image (little sneak peek for you!) that he printed it right away :)
I can't wait to show you the full shoot!

SAY IT LIKE IT IS...TF $%# SHOOTS!
I often get requests from models and photographers to take part in various photo shoots. As much as I love my job and I enjoy meeting and working with new people, I still need to make a living and ensure the quality of my work and how it is portrayed is consistent.
I don't for one second believe that I am above working with someone but I do need to be selective about how I spend my time and I need to ensure that the images I get will actually be used and added to my book and website. Especially if I do the shoot for free. Sometimes the models' look, the creative concept or the photographers style doesn't fill a gap in my portfolio, but that doesn't mean to say that any of them is bad. It's just not a fit.
So I thought I'd clear the air a little; these are my interpretations and opinions on the follow...
TFCD SHOOTS
Time for CD shoots are when all participants give up their time to take part in the shoot and they get a CD of images. As far as I am concerned, this is an antiquated pseudonym for a FREE shoot. Every shoot I do, I get the images. That goes without saying.
I've received emails from people saying that they will "allow" me to use the pictures if I do it for free...I have news for you rookie, I get the images regardless.
Telling me that the shoot will be beneficial to all involved because you will tell your agency about me and thus garner exposure for me, is a weak and somewhat transparent attempt at begging.
I am a professional. I understand the business element of our industry very well and I know all the pro's and con's to doing a free shoot. Here are my conditions for doing a free shoot:
1. The models must have the right look for my book and have relevant experience.
2. The creative concept for the shoot must be something that can realistically executed given the teams' collective skills and it must be something I need in my portfolio.
3. The photographers and stylists' style of work should be complimentary to mine (and mine to theirs) and again, it should be something that fills a niche in my portfolio.
4. The requested makeup look must be something I want to do and need to have in my book.
5. Is this a collaboration or is one party art directing the entire look and shoot?
Should any one of these conditions be iffy, it then boils down to networking and broadening my experience. If the networking opportunity is beneficial and the shoot introduces me (on a first hand basis) to people or agencies I don't already know, then I'm in.
For free shoots, it's not a personal thing if I say no. It's business. In this industry, our time costs money (as do makeup and hair products!) and if I am not receiving compensation so that I can pay my rent, the exposure and image quality need to justify me outlaying that cost.
So moving forward, if you'd like me to do a free shoot for/with you, please don't send me an email listing how amazing it will be shoot with you and how lucky I am that you're allowing me to be a part of it and how much exposure I will get because your sister has a blog and your aunty is your booker....rather be honest and give me the facts:
1. When is the shoot
2. How many models and how many looks
3. Half day or full day
4. Studio or location
5. Send reference pics for the shoot as well as images of the makeup and hair looks you want
6. Give me a link to your website so I can see your work
Loving my job doesn't mean it's a hobby and that I should do it for free. Loving my job means that I am passionate and I always give 150 thousand % on a shoot and I expect the same from others. There's a popular saying that goes something like "You're only as good as your last shoot" and I want every shoot to be better than the last.
Optimistic? Perhaps, but that's how I roll.
[editor's note: I am always keen to work with new people and try new things, please just understand that my schedule is normally manic, so I have to be selective with my time. If you're interested in working with me, drop me a line...if I haven't emailed you already ;) ....and let's make pretty pictures!]

MY WORK ~ CATALOGUE SHOOT
I have a gap in my portfolio. I needed a catalogue-type shoot showing a clean, polished look so I called on some of my favourites and we had a fun day!
Megan van der Westhuizen took time out of her hectically busy schedule to style the shoot and I must say, it is impeccable! Each look is meticulously finished with a finesse that is rare.
Kendall from Ice Models was our model and although she is a newbie, I have a feeling she's going to take the industry by storm. This was only her second shoot and she takes direction incredibly well...such a breeze to work with and so polite and sweet. Oh and she has immaculate skin...every MUA's dream!
I was looking for a Zara-esque lookbook vibe and I think we nailed it. What do you think?
